Playing with Composition; Challenge #289

Dancing Light

~

This photo shows off shape, light, and texture very well. We see light dancing off the waves in the water, along with the shapes of refracted light, and contrasting light and dark areas, which help to highlight the texture of the water and various colors.

This week the Lens-Artists are playing with composition. John at Photobyjohnbo.com asked us to explore four aspects of composition; light, shape, texture, and form. These factors subconsciously drive my photos, but the factor I am most conscious of is the composition or framing of the photo. To me, this often differentiates a good photo from an average one. How to artistically frame what we’re looking at to make an interesting photo. And yes, the shape, texture, light, and form all help create a better photo as well.

Anyway, here are more photos that highlight aspects of composition. Enjoy!

Green Goo

I love this photo for the vibrant color, circular shapes, and texture of the algae in our pond. The small twigs offer a nice contrast in color, shape, and texture.

Bridge over peaceful waters.

The bridge (shape) is the subject that makes the image more interesting to me. It’s a nice counter to the ripples (shape and texture), pleasing reflections (shape), and colors in the water. This image offers a peaceful easy feeling just like the Eagle’s song lyrics. Sorry Simon and Garfunkle, no Bridge Over Troubled Waters here!

Sunset serenade.

The light, color, and shapes of the clouds make this an interesting photo. Color is the main star for me, but the image also shows off light in the sky, form in the clouds, and shapes in the trees.

Fungi fun!

~

Texture and shape are the stars in this image. The texture and shapes in the bark are endlessly fascinating to me. And the fungi offer a fun contrast of shape and texture to the bark. Nature sure knows how to paint a pretty picture!

May you find bountiful beauty in your daily travels.

  1. Brad, you are a gifted photographer! These are beautiful compositions and lovingly captured and described. The sunset serenade is stunning and yes, the contrast of the trees against the glorious red is incredible. Oh, the bubbling green goo looks almost alien! Annika

  4. I love the words you weaved into this, Brad. And your “Dancing Light” was a great feature along with your haiku. As for your photos, You stumped me on the goo. I thought it might be moss. How pretty. Everything is pretty in it’s place isn’t it? That could be wall art! And the fungi was indeed a fun find. Yes…a peaceful easy feeling. One that always comes from your view of the world, Brad. Have a great week.

  5. Even green goo is beautiful, and I love that you captured it for us, Brad! I bet there are frogs in there, too. šŸøšŸ¤— Keep snapping photos of the places we donā€™t always notice; itā€™s your talent, my friend. You are a beauty detector! HNS šŸ’•

  6. Your photos have always looked wonderful to me, Brad, but it was fun to learn what you look for when evaluating a shot. I always notice light, color, and texture, but less so shape, and that was fun to observe in this collection. My favorite shot was the first, of the water. There’s so much mystery too in that one regarding what’s beneath that wonderful color and texture. Turtles? Alligators? Lol Thanks for the fun, my friend.

And for some reason, I stopped getting notifications of your posts. All fixed now. šŸ™‚ I’m happy!

  7. Your “Green Goo” shot is excellent, with its colors and textures, and the natural beauty that brings it together. With all your shots, I see your admirable trait in your ability to compose and frame your shot. Like in your ‘circular photo’ of your latest post, a moon shot is just a moon, but you put it into a position where everything comes together… and with these shots, it’s the same thing. Taking a beautiful scene and then making it ring with your composition. Somewhere in the past, I wrote how this was a huge weakness with me as I find a beautiful scene and get overwhelmed with it and have a tendency not to step back and think of composition (although I do learn through practice and viewing the photography of others :-)!). Being able to also add a verse and poetry to your shots is what makes them memorable. Cheers to a great Sunday ahead.
