Abstract Moments: LAPC #296

Minor editing of color and shadow from an image of flowing water in a creek.

“In every landscape should reside jewels of abstract art waiting to be discovered.”- Melissa Brown

This week Ritva invited us to explore abstract photography. I learned a few tips from Ritva and others who experiment more than I do. My abstracts are primarily from a composition found in nature that looks artsy to me. Other photographers use filters, long shutter times, blurred focus, AI, and fancy software. None of those are currently in my toolbox; just nature, perspective, a cellphone, and some basic editing tools.

In Ritva’s words, “Abstract photography breaks the normal rules of realism. It turns everyday scenes, objects, or textures into visual poetry, inviting viewers to see beyond the surface. It plays with light and shadow, blurring reality and using vibrant colors. Abstract images evoke emotions, spark curiosity, and challenge our perception. It is a genre of photography that focuses on the shapes, colors, textures, and patterns of the subject, rather than its literal representation.”

A fun perspective of a chair back with a blurred background.

“Abstraction generally involves implication, suggestion, and mystery rather than obvious description. Like a good poem, a good abstraction attacks your feelings before your understanding.”- Robert Genn

A close-up of the grain in a table top. Or maybe it’s an alien crop pattern, energy waves, or some other mystery?

~

I love the vibrancy of this one. Stunning colors, contrasts, and patterns. All I did is boost the saturation and tweak the tint a little.

Yet another close-up. This time of dew-covered moss.

Artsy reflections on the pond and edited to B & W created this abstract image. A win for team Brad!

I’m grateful for Ritva and the other Lens-Artists who nudge me to stay open, experiment, and be curious.

May your days be filled with fun, creativity, and the willingness to try new things.

  1. I love these!!!! Especially the moss close-up with bubbles!! I am so glad you are doing these challenges, Brad 💗
Also, this part of the quote you included is so apt of poetry, “

Like a good poem, a good abstraction attacks your feelings before your understanding.”- Robert Genn”

Specifically I loved the parallel you drew (and yes, 😉, pun was intended due to your selection of images)!!! Have even more fun! 🤩

  2. Love the dew covered moss! And I love your organic Nature abstracts more than manipulated photography. I think that you have a great eye for things and to find the natural art is such a gift. That’s not to say that creativity isn’t valuable and important. I just love when the wonder is seen right before us.

  3. Loved all your water reflections Brad, and the chair back was an interesting perspective. You definitely stumped me on the dew-covered moss. It looks bubbly and like it is underwater. I was thinking an aquarium. Looks like you had fun! A neat challenge to learn and enjoy from both Ritva, and others.

  4. Brad, I think my photos are like yours, just created with camera movement, cropping and and noticing details and colors. It is an approach I totally understand, you can do wonders with different tools, but you can do it like you did and get the same result. I really like your last black and white one the ripples and reflection create a great shot.

  5. Your photos of dew drops always amaze me, Brad. The fact that you take these photos with an iPhone is even more impressive. You have an innate gift for finding and capturing beauty, and I love seeing your work. I thought the table was a crop of some kind at first and I was like, how did he get way up there to take that photo?! Haha. I hope you are enjoying your week, my friend! xo

    • Thank you for the kind words Randall. I have a hard time not comparing my photos to yours and others with proper camera equipment. And I’m still pretty happy with my skills and phone camera. 😎
