Day and Night; Challenge #284

This week Sofia asked us to explore the contrasts of light (day and night) for the Lens-Artist Challenge.

Her photos beautifully portray the changing light as we move from day to night and winter to spring. Donna walked us through one day with a range of light and subjects. I focused on one setting (over a few days) here at the pond in our apartment complex. The settings aren’t overly dramatic but do offer a sense of changing light and moods during the recent winter storm. Usually, I don’t take many nighttime photos due to the limits of cellphone technology. But during this last cold spell, I couldn’t resist the call of nature in her nighttime attire.

Thankfully, the images show the dance of light (some natural and some man-made) and dark.

This image shows the bright light of daytime reflecting off the snow and ice during our recent snow and arctic blast. Even this image has a fair amount of dark in the shadows.

~

This day was overcast with a soft moody light that created a nearly black-and-white image, embodying a mix of day and night in one moment.

Here is a classic winter sunset full of color and soft light.

This moody nighttime photo offers a fun mix of shadows, textures, and soft light.

Finally, this nighttime image offers ethereal blue light reflecting off the snow and ice.

May we enjoy the many shifting moods of nature that come from the dance of light and dark.

  2. Thanks for sharing this exploration of light with the rest of us, Brad! I especially love the sunset image and the moody night-time image that follows it. And I agree with a previous commenter about the uplifting power of a BLUE sky (especially when one has been experiencing a lot of gray days as we have been here in the Boston area…)

  3. Love the beautiful array of light reflections…light is one of my favorite things to explore and I love seeing the shift of it in the landscapes around as the day and seasons change. Love your captures…especially the night one, although they are all beautiful. I feel like an exercise like this helps us to be extra present and really deepen into the experience here and now. Thank you for sharing!

  4. Beautiful images. I think the first moody dark one was my favorite. It reminds me of a night I had walking around with my camera shooting black and white. The whole sensation was full of winter cold in Pittsburgh, PA (where I was living). I was delighted and happy through the gloom, just letting my observations guide me. A juxtaposition that I have found pleasing throughout time is the openness and fun during the moody moments. Great work, Brad!

  5. It is brisk and cold in your neck of the woods, and the photos are stunning. Like you, I don’t do a lot of night photography. I think you SHOULD do more, Brad. While I loved your day images, you were right, the mood and mix of shadows and textures completely changes a place. Thank you for the shout out, and oh, that Sunset! Sending Arizona warm hugs to your beautiful space.

  7. A great series of photos showing the beautiful and different moods of light during a full day ~ the contrast of the muted colors of the quiet of winter is offset perfectly by your classic winter sunset full of color and soft light, and come together well in the nighttime glow :-). Night shots always have a bit of mystery, and you capture this well!
