Soulful Sunday 105 – Ode to a Rose

Ode to a Rosebeauty, soul food

~

love at first sight

a garden delight

colors to warm the heart

thorns to give a start

~

inhale their smell

and risk a magic spell

aromas to feed the soul

when life takes its toll

~

simple garden graces

from ordinary places

the beauty of god

in plant and sod

~

I’ve always loved roses and I don’t even know why. I suspect part of it is that growing up we had a rose garden in our backyard. Later, I learned that roses became my grandfather’s passion in retirement with his roses even winning local competitions! They’re a simple plant at first blush. A wild thorny weed that has been domesticated to cultivate the blossoms for color and smell. They can become a metaphor for life reminding us to plant our roots deeply, reach for the sky, set healthy boundaries, and share our gifts freely.

May beauty feed your soul this week and always.

  1. I love roses as well! They do something to my soul. Rose essential oil is known to open the heart chakra. I’m also an aromatherapist and I wrote an article on some amazing things about rose essential oil that kind of explains (to me anyway) why this flower and its beautiful aroma moves our heart and soul the way it does. if you’re interested, here is the link: https://michelesorganics.wordpress.com/2014/04/ 🌹🌺🌸

  2. You had my attention with the title itself, and the poem, with its gorgeous imagery retained it. The philosophy towards the end will remain as the memory of roses comes to my mind again. Beautiful work!

  3. Beautiful poem and fabulous rose.. I learnt to love roses from my grandfather too.. He had lots of varieties in his garden and as I grew older my husband and I would take him out to specialised garden centres where his new pride became a blue rose..
So enjoyed Brad.. Have a wonderful week 🙂

  4. I love roses too. And I know exactly when I fell in love with them. I was about 4 years old and visited my maternal grandparents when I discovered several tall ‘bushes’ of white, fragrant roses in their yard.
