Dog Days

Dog Days

~summer, heat, poetry

dog days of summer

melting streets and tender feet

meet the heat with play

~

I don’t know who to credit this playful print that I saw at the local Pier One store. The image, especially the heart glasses, made me smile and realize it’s time to play more. Summer heat or not, I want to get out, play, sing, dance, or just be silly. So today I started with a casual bike ride, focusing more on enjoying the ride than getting anywhere fast. The ride became a meditation on staying relaxed and present to the cooler summer morning. I came back refreshed in body and spirit.

I hope you find time to play this week.

  1. The other day I was taking the van to the gas station and on the way home I took a side road out of town and enjoyed the country side. Good music. Nice breeze. Alone with my thoughts.

Every now and than we need to put our routine on hold and remind ourselves that life wasn’t meant to last forever. Soak it in while we can.

    Happy Trails!

  2. A perfect poem and philosophy to live by during the Dog Days of August ~ play as often as possible in the sun, for another winter will be upon us before we know it. Your words match the painting perfectly, as if you are reading its mind. Cheers to a great weekend ahead.

  3. I so agree with you about the value of playfulness. Best approach to nearly any aspect or event in life.

There was even an ancient period in Japan when the court nobles cultivated play as so essential to living the good life, they refused to say, “My uncle has died”, preferring “My uncle is playing at being dead”.
