KogarashiKogarashi, winter, poetry

winds blow from the west

announcing the arrival of winter

my heart quiets for a long rest

I found this photo on theoddessyonline.com. It was part of an article on 11 beautiful Japanese words that don’t exist in English. I love the words, photos and fact that these words convey a whole collection of experiences drawn from the Japanese love for nature and politeness. They convey meanings and subtleties that we don’t have in English. Enjoy!

  1. So beautiful, Brad! It makes me think of a piece of music my daughter composed a while back that was inspired by a Japanese phrase meaning ‘sad snowy night.’ Its very beautiful, have a listen if you’d like…

  2. This is a great feeling to have at the end of summer ~ the autumn to begin to exhale and relax, and we have the winter to rest before getting the privilege of doing it all over again 🙂 Cheers to a great week ahead!

  3. There is nothing quite like that message from Mother Nature – the cool yet welcome embrace of a fall chill in the air. It’s what I miss most about living in Florida, perhaps. But, I find another resonance with your post, Brad. My son has recently begun taking a class to learn the Japanese language, and I am both amazed and delighted by the intricacies of the language that are reserved for it alone. Although sometimes harsh sounding to the ear, the meaning behind the words and phrases is beautiful indeed. Thanks, as always, for sharing 😉

    • That’s wonderful that your son is learning Japanese. I’ve heard it’s hard to learn and filled with subtleties! Even though I love beaches, I’ve always felt I would get bored of the weather and lack of 4 clear seasons. May we listen, appreciate and preserve Mother Nature. 🙂
