11 Tips to Thrive in 2014

Are you ready to thrive in 2014?

11 tips to thrive in 2014

With so many people talking about goals, intentions and resolutions, I wanted to offer some tips to not only start the year with a boost of energy, but offer the tools to maintain your progress. From my experience, commitment and process are the keys to achieving our goals. We need to develop effective habits and systems that move us toward our dreams and goals.

Sidenote: I’m getting the chance to practice what I preach! I just gave notice from my job as content and marketing guy for Blue Zoo Creative* with no clear sense of what to do next. This has triggered waves of fear, doubt and indecision. Not how I wanted to start the new year, but then I remember to breath deeply, encourage myself, open to spirit and keep moving forward as best I can. And I’m committing to cultivating compassion and better decisions for 2014!

*They build great websites and can help with all aspects of online marketing if you’re looking for help with your online presence.

So, this post offers some systems to keep us grounded and healthy as we aim to thrive and achieve our goals for 2014. My goals involve making better decisions, developing trust/intuition and cultivating compassion. Next I’ll be working on systems to help ensure I can make progress on them since they aren’t fixed point goals.

Let’s look at some great ways to thrive in 2014.

  1. Laugh a little. Don’t take everything so serious, remember to smile and keep on going. If you’re breathing, you’re alive, and that’s great!
  2. Use systems to create progress toward your goals. Progress and process are more important than results. Read this post for more ideas on systems for success.
  3. Pick a few meaningful goals or intentions rather than a long list. Pick ones that help you feel good, feed your passions and mean something to you, not a ‘should’ like losing weight. Maybe you have a passion for dance. Dance more, and you will probably lose weight as a by-product of doing something you enjoy and value.
  4. Spend time outdoors, preferably in quiet, natural spaces that feed your soul.
  5. Unplug from the digital world. We need time to connect with the physical world and engage our senses. I do this each night, and am considering routine days off from the digital world.
  6. Get more exercise and sleep. Our bodies thrive on movement. Do anything you enjoy. Simple walking is great exercise.
  7. Drink plenty of pure water and eat more whole grains, fruits and vegetables with raw foods included.
  8. Connect with people you care about. We all crave connection and belonging. Good relationships offer nurturing, acceptance and somewhere to belong. Many studies show that our happiness is boosted by strong social connections.
  9. Meditate or engage in some practice designed to center, calm and focus you. Meditation has been shown to boost our immune system, calm our minds and emotions, and provide a foundation of peace.
  10. Practice service, kindness and giving, preferably on a routine basis. Read more about kindness in this post called Kindness Returns.
  11. Practice gratitude. Appreciating who we are and what we have, grows the good in our lives. Here’s a fun post called Open Your Heart to Gratitude.

Here are some other posts to aid you in thriving for 2014.

What helps you thrive and keep on track to reach your goals? I’d love to hear from you.

  1. Thanks Eric, Bold or rash? No job, no clarity and loss of income. Makes me wonder if I was rash. But now I must forge ahead. Not sure what, maybe apply my content & marketing skills to my passion for sustainability or maybe whole new direction.

    • The sustainability field is growing! Might be a good field to explore. You’ll land solidly on your feet, somewhere. 🙂 New directions are healthy and the envy of many who won’t take that leap.

  2. Interesting post, Brad. Thank you for sharing. I am intrigued with number 4: “Spend time outdoors, preferably in quiet, natural spaces that feed your soul.”

Any chance that a quiet place indoor is also useful to feed our soul?

      • Thank you, Brad. Nature works best for me too actually. But I won’t exclude the importance of dark and solitary rooms as sometimes inspiration arises in such places. It may not work for others, but it does for me. So I think you’re right. What matters is not where you are, but how you’re connected to the Soul of the Universe. Blessings and love to you, xoxo

  3. I like your phrase connection to the ‘Soul of the Universe’. Most mystics and meditators would say we find that by going within, but I also find that connection being in nature. Ultimately, I don’t think it matters where or how we connect, only that we do connect. blessings,
