Most of us yearn for freedom. It seems to be hard wired into our mind and hearts.

Living in the United States, I, like many of us, believe in the ideals upon which our country was founded: freedom, equality, happiness and self government.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. – Declaration of Independence
Unfortunately, the reality often falls short of the ideal. Today, we see an increasing scope and interference in our lives by our government, in the apparent interest of security, both at home and abroad. So what is a freedom minded person to do? Push for reform, complain but do nothing (as many people do), rebel, or move to a new country. I’ve explored all the options and currently lean toward reform and/ or move. We’ll see which one wins out!

From a spiritual perspective, it points to the need to embrace the true freedom that lies at the core of our being.
No matter how good or bad the circumstances, we always have choice (which is the ultimate freedom) in how we respond to a situation. Sometimes we can change circumstances, but as brave souls such as Viktor Frankl have demonstrated, happiness and meaning come from within. Our inherent nature is to be free. But we have to choose it, embrace it and live it in order to be free in our minds and hearts.
So for this July 4th, I celebrate my inner freedom, as well as the relative freedom and benefits to living in the US. May you find the freedom that knows no bounds.

Agree almost totally. I said almost totally because of my type of mouldings life I went through, like everybody else. If you are green and I am purple, I shouldn’t judge you and with the same token, not deny purple. You see it takes courage and trust to confess.
With due respect to total freedom, I believe one has to be ready for it, no doubt the hen keeps the chica under her wings till she us confident.
Human being vary in time to be fully natured and able to know the consequences of misusing freedom, therefore, just because a child becomes 18 doesn’t necessarily mean he/she can be fully in control (when the body us fully charged to overturn the NBC/

So, to sum it up, loosen the control/rope SLOWLY. And instead of counting years, we should measure the mental/emotional age (kind if a driving test prior to the driving license). Here we are testing the driving skill for driving his/her LIFE which can endanger the driver as well as others on his way. DOES NOT MEAN TELLING THEM WHAT TO DO.

Great idea! I’ve often thought that we fail our children by focusing so much on intellectual skills, but not life skills. Maybe future schools will have life skills and freedom scale tests! 🙂 And there is a growing awareness of the need for emotional, life and love skills like the work by Heart Math Institute.

Hi Georgina, Auto spellers can be fun! Thanks for a thoughtful post. I agree that part of freedom is allowing others to be themselves. Not an easy thing to do. Just like truly powerful people don’t need to harm others to be strong, the truly free have no need to control others. And yes, we grow into freedom and responsibility. It took me a loooooong time!
