There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression in unique.
If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable it is, not how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.
You do not have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you.
Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer , divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others. – Martha Graham
I love this quote. Twenty years after first reading it, this quote still perfectly expresses the concept of being authentic and following our inner urges, whether they are to be more creative or simply living our daily lives.
When we are filled with dissatisfaction, it may be a sign of being too focused on what isn’t working or not paying attention to the signals our inner muse is sending. As we learn to be more gentle and accepting, we open the space for learning and creativity to flow. Acceptance helps mellow out the inevitable ups and downs of life, while opening the creative channels. For me, acceptance is a doorway to being authentic.
I’m glad to say that I am more accepting of myself lately, including for the mistakes I’ve made. I feel better when I focus on acceptance and gratitude. With gratitude and acceptance we feel more more peaceful and contented. Some of the discontent comes from not being tuned into our intuition and guidance. In those moments we have the subjective experience of discontent or being “off the path”.
In reality, we can never be “off the path”. We can only be closed to life, good and the flow of inner guidance. Life is always providing guidance to us. The question is whether we are paying attention. When we tune in, listen, and act on this inner guidance, there is a feeling of peace and contentment. Life is providing directions on which way to go if we pay attention. Much like the inner urges of creativity that ask us to try something new, stretch and grow. Life is a constant dance of satisfaction and dissatisfaction. If we pay attention, life flows more easily. This is the essence of authentic, creative living.
